What is Drift Hunters?
Drift Hunters is a 3D drifting game built on Unity that's been a staple of browser racing games for years. The concept is straightforward: pick a car, pick a track, and drift around corners to earn points. The longer and faster you hold a drift, the more points you rack up. Use those points to buy better cars and upgrades, then go drift some more.
What makes Drift Hunters stand out from other browser racing games is the car list and the tuning depth. You're not stuck with three generic cars — there are over two dozen vehicles ranging from entry-level coupes to high-end supercars, and each one can be tuned with engine, transmission, turbo, and tire upgrades. The tracks range from tight parking lots to sweeping mountain roads, and each one demands a different approach.
How to Play Drift Hunters
Controls
- W / Up Arrow: Accelerate
- S / Down Arrow: Brake / Reverse
- A / Left Arrow: Steer left
- D / Right Arrow: Steer right
- Space: Handbrake — this is your main drifting tool
The handbrake is the key to everything. Approach a corner at speed, tap space to break traction, then counter-steer and throttle through the slide. It takes practice to get the feel right — too much handbrake and you spin out, too little and you just grip through the corner without scoring any points.
Scoring
Your drift score depends on three things: speed, angle, and duration. A slow shallow drift earns almost nothing. A fast, high-angle drift that you hold through an entire sweeping corner earns big points. Chain drifts together without crashing or losing your slide and you'll build a multiplier that makes your score explode.
Cars and Upgrades
You start with enough points to pick from a few basic cars. The starter vehicles are fine for learning the mechanics, but you'll want to upgrade quickly. Here's how the upgrade paths work:
- Engine upgrades give you more power, which means you can maintain higher speeds through drifts and break traction more easily.
- Transmission upgrades improve gear ratios, helping you stay in the power band while sliding.
- Turbo upgrades add a big power spike, which is great for initiating drifts on demand.
- Tire upgrades actually reduce grip on purpose — less grip means easier drifting. This sounds counterintuitive but it's one of the most important upgrades.
You can also customize the paint, wheels, and camber of your car. These are cosmetic only, but there's something satisfying about building a proper drift machine that looks the part.
Best Tracks for Beginners
Start with the Parking Lot or Drift Arena tracks. They're wide open with gentle corners, which gives you room to make mistakes without hitting walls. Once you're comfortable maintaining drifts, move on to City or Mountain for tighter, more technical layouts that reward precise car control.
Tips for Bigger Drift Scores
- Learn throttle control. Mashing the gas through every corner doesn't work. You need to modulate the throttle to maintain your angle without spinning. Ease on and off to keep the car in the sweet spot.
- Use the handbrake to initiate, then steer to maintain. The handbrake starts the drift, but your steering inputs and throttle keep it going. Don't hold space the whole time.
- Don't sleep on tire upgrades. Reducing your grip is the single biggest improvement you can make early on. It makes every car dramatically easier to drift.
- Pick the right car for the track. Heavy powerful cars are great on wide open tracks where you can build speed. Lighter nimble cars are better on tight technical circuits.
- Watch your multiplier. If you're on a long drift chain and you're approaching a section where you might crash, it can be smarter to straighten out and bank your points than to risk losing everything by hitting a wall.
