Crossy Road — Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?
Crossy Road takes the old joke and turns it into a genuinely great game. You play as a little blocky character — starting as a chicken, naturally — trying to cross an endless series of roads, rivers, and train tracks. The catch is that traffic doesn't stop for you, trains come without much warning, and if you fall in the river without a log to stand on, you're done.
The game has this really charming voxel art style that makes everything look like a cute diorama, which is a funny contrast to how tense it actually gets when you're trying to weave between semi trucks on a six-lane highway. There are tons of characters to unlock too — everything from ducks and cats to a floppy disk and a zombie. They don't change the gameplay, but collecting them gives you a reason to keep coming back.
What makes Crossy Road special is how it turns a really simple concept into something endlessly replayable. Every crossing is different because the traffic and obstacles are randomized, so you can't just memorize a path. You have to react, make split-second decisions, and hope you timed things right. It's the perfect "one more run" game.
How to Play Crossy Road
The controls couldn't be simpler:
- Up arrow or W — Hop forward
- Down arrow or S — Hop backward
- Left arrow or A — Hop left
- Right arrow or D — Hop right
- Each press moves your character one lane in that direction
- Cross roads by timing gaps in traffic
- Cross rivers by hopping on floating logs and lily pads
- Avoid trains — they move fast and give very little warning
Your character can only move in grid steps, not freely, so positioning is key. One wrong hop can put you directly in front of a car or off the edge of a log into the water. The camera also slowly scrolls forward, so if you sit still for too long, it'll push you off the bottom of the screen and end your game.
Tips for Going Further
Don't rush, but don't stop. This is the core tension of Crossy Road. Moving too fast means you might hop right into traffic, but standing still will get you killed by the scrolling camera. Find a rhythm where you're moving steadily forward but taking a moment to read the lanes before each crossing.
Look two lanes ahead. When you're crossing a road, you're probably watching the lane right in front of you. But by the time you hop into it, the lane beyond that is what matters. Train yourself to scan further ahead so you're never surprised.
Use the sound. Turn your volume on. Trains announce themselves with a warning horn before they blast through, and you'll hear the rumble of traffic patterns. A lot of experienced players rely on audio cues almost as much as visual ones.
Rivers are the biggest danger zone. Unlike roads where you just need a gap, rivers require you to stay on moving logs. Pay attention to which direction the logs are flowing and how fast. If you need to cross a wide river, look for a series of logs moving in the same direction — trying to jump between logs going opposite ways is a recipe for falling in.
Coins unlock new characters. You'll see coins scattered across the map. Grabbing them isn't worth dying for, but if you can pick them up along your route, they add up over time and unlock new characters from the prize machine.
Games Like Crossy Road
If the endless dodging gameplay has you hooked, Subway Surfers is a natural next step — it's another dodge-traffic game but with a 3D runner format and tons of upgrades. Temple Run 2 offers similar reflex-based gameplay in a temple-setting with power-ups. And if you want something a bit different but still quick and addictive, Slope delivers that same high-score chasing rush.
